Albert Blithe was an original Toccoa soldier with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, formed in 1943 as part of the then-experimental Paratroopers segment of the United States Army during World War Two. Born on 25 June 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Blithe completed only 3 years of high school before enlisting for the Paratroopers on 18 August 1942.Blithe trained with the rest of Easy Company at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, followed by advanced training at Camp Mackall, North Carolina and Aldbourne, England in preparation for Operation Overlord. After midnight on 6 June 1944, he jumped into Normandy with thousands of other Airborne personnel, where he became disoriented and confused before reuniting with his unit. Blithe experienced disabling fear during Carentan, but overcame it with help from his commanding officer, then-Lieutenant Winters, during The Battle of Bloody Gulch outside of Carentan, France.Within days, Blithe was shot in the neck/shoulder area by a German army sniper while scouting with fellow soldiers for enemy positions. Blithe received the Purple Heart for his wound and was discharged from the Army after the war's end. Stephen Ambrose's book Band of Brothers and the Spielberg/Hanks HBO miniseries of the same name stated that Albert Blithe never recovered from the wounds he received in Normandy. He died in 1948 , which was found to be untrue: surviving members of the Blithe family revealed that, in fact, Blithe did indeed recover, re-enlisted into the Army and served in both Korea and Taiwan during the early- and mid-fifties. He married and had a son as well. Blithe lived another 19 years beyond his erroneous death date and never retired from the US Army.Blithe died from complications of a perforated ulcer on 17 December 1967 while stationed at and on active duty in Wiesbaden, West Germany. He was 44 years of age. He was buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (formerly Fort Myer), Virginia Show less «
